The good news is that I seem to have resolved this myself. I checked Event viewer and found that Sugarsync was crashing. I don't need Sugarsync any more so I uninstalled it and now things work again. The bad news is that Sugarsync is also on my husband's computer and he does need it, however to date it is not causing an issue. Hopefully it stays that way because we have a paid subscription to use it. Perhaps I had an old non-updated version. Will wait a few days before marking solved just to be sure....
