the problem is as you say more than likely caused by CCleaner

It is not IMHO a utility that should be used, even without the registry cleaning aspect, WITHOUT knowing the implications of accepting the default settings.
On the default settings, it can delete restore points, dump files etc.
I suppose it is too late now - but CCleaner actually prompts you before using the registry cleaner to back up the registry
