Have you tried the things mentioned in the HP Support Forums, such as How do I disable auto brightness of the display? or HP Pavilion G6 2320TX - Turn off Auto Brightness? Not the same model PC, but probably the same "feature." Most likely seems to be a graphics card setting, but maybe not.
