USB documents

As bulrush suggested, first check if Windows has the document files set to be read only. That would allow MS-Word to open the files, but you would need to save them with a different name or to a different location.

If they are not read only, then you need to see of Word 2003 is seeing them as protected documents. Open one of the problem files in Word 2003 and click on "Tools" in the menu bar and see if "Unprotect document" is showing. You may need to expand the Tools menu to see all the options. You would need to unprotect the document before editing.

If the above two items do not solve your problem, please let us know exactly what happens if you try to add text to the document. Can you place a cursor in the document? If so, what happens when you try to type something?
