Using Windows XP Mode for recovery

I performed a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit from Win XP Pro 32 bit. Win 7 does not support the version of an application which I used on Win XP. There is not a Win 7 application upgrade, but there is a Win 7 new install for the application. I need to at least retrieve the data by creating an export file (I know should've, would've, could've earlier). I no longer have access to a Win XP computer. Will Windows XP Mode help me resolve the problem? 1) Copy the application's folder from a backup external drive 2) Run the application on the virtual disc in order to perform a CSV export 3) Copy export from virtual disc to Win 7 4) Install Win 7 version of application 4) Import file

I downloaded Win XP Mode and Virtual PC, but haven't installed them as I'm looking for either other options or confirmation that my plan is workable. Since 98% of the win 7 upgrade worked with minimal problems which I've resolved, I'm not placing re-install Win XP on my list of options.
